Born in Germany, of Russian and Polish parents, Marlene was raised in New York City. She has had a long interest in a variety of the arts. She graduated from the High School of Art & Design in New York and studied painting at the Brooklyn Museum Art School. She went on to receive her BA from Elmira College in Art History and Modern Languages. While at college she developed an interest in antique quilts, which led to an in-depth study of textiles. Because of this growing interest, Marlene opened a boutique in Manhattan specializing in antique clothing from the 20’s and 30’s. She traveled to Paris and throughout the United States to find vintage items for the shop.

As a result of her work creating store windows, she developed a desire to explore freelance styling. She quickly enhanced her career as a specialty textile dealer to include editorial and advertising work. In collaborating with the many photographers that she came in contact with grew a fascination with the art form of photography. She honed her skills as a photographer through careful exploration working with the many experts working in the field of editorial photography, as well as by enrolling at the International Center for Photography.

Her natural progression in photography led her to landscapes and, as a result, she has traveled to Ireland, Italy and France. More recently, she has returned to her editorial roots by capturing the spontaneity of fashion backstage during the runway shows.

“The process from the beginning to end is very important to me and therefore I do my own printing. That part is magic for me”. Her work has been exhibited at the Morgan-Fredrics Gallery and Prudence Designs, both in New York.

Marlene has also done editorial work for Architectural Digest, Victoria Magazine, Southern Accents, New York Times Magazine and Bergdorf Goodman. She is currently working on two book projects.

Marlene finds her inspiration in revealing the sublime in an instant. “What motivates me to take a picture is seeing something of beauty and seizing the ultimate moment.”
